Peacebuilding in Colombia, 2017

Hermione won a scholarship to take part in the 2017 Peacebuilding in Colombia course. She graduated from UOB with a degree in Politics and Spanish the following year. Here she tells us what she gained from her time in Colombia.

Peacebuilding in Colombia is a dynamic course that offers its students the unique opportunity to complement their academic study with field trips that show the real-time developments in the peace process. The course shows the complexity of implementation; making it an important and relevant study programme for years to come.

The course has been key to what I have gone on to do since. My dissertation focused on what the peace process offers Colombia’s most marginalised groups, and led me to become interested in security in Latin America more generally. I am now Communications Officer at Canning House, the UK’s leading forum for contacts, thought-leadership and pragmatic debate on Latin American political, economic and social trends and issues, and business risks and opportunities. I continue to work closely on issues affecting Colombia, including tracking the peace process’ progress. I would strongly recommend this course for anyone interested in pursuing a career in international affairs or peacebuilding.
