Guatapé and El Peñol

Amazing scenery just a couple of hours from the city.

An easy day trip from Medellin, or a relaxed place to spend the weekend, Guatapé is a pretty lakeside town famous for its colourful painted buildings and the beautiful countryside that surrounds it. You can explore the lakes and reservoirs nearby on a boat tour (some offer beer included in the price!) or relax in one of the restaurants on the main square. We recommend the trucha, or trout, which is locally caught and really tasty.

It takes about two hours to get there by bus, and the scenery on the way means that it’s a good idea to go for a window seat if you can. You should stop at El Peñol, the rock, on your way to Guatapé. A huge natural boulder offers amazing views of Guatapé and the surrounding mountains and lakes. The 649 steps to the top are well worth the effort!
