‘Armed Conflict, Peace Processes and the challenges of Peacebuilding in Colombia’ is a 3-week academic program run in partnership with Universidad de Los Andes (Uniandes) each summer.

It is delivered at Uniandes’ beautiful modern campus in Bogota, Colombia. It is open to students from a range of arts, humanities and social science subjects, aimed at those with an interest in international relations and conflict resolution.

5th Anniversary Year

Peacebuilding_5_Years_Rosette_ColourRed Tree Study and Universidad de Los Andes are delighted to celebrate the 5th Anniversary of this hugely successful Peacebuilding in Colombia course in summer 2021. Since its launch, the course has brought students from prestigious universities worldwide to Bogota to study the intricacies of the Colombian peace processes.

We have hosted many wonderful students from universities including Yale, Duke, USC, Brown, Boston University, Emory University and NYU in the USA , Cambridge, UCL, QUB, Bristol, York, Sheffield, Cardiff and Edinburgh in the UK, Uppsala and Lund in Sweden, UBC and Queen’s in Canada, Otago in New Zealand, and many more.

Academic Content

This academic summer program is offered by the world-renowned Political Science department at Universidad de Los Andes (Uniandes) in Bogota, Colombia. It explores the recent history of the Colombian conflict and the present challenges of peacebuilding at this important time as society negotiates a future free from armed conflict.

This intensive three-week study program is delivered in English and consists of three modules:

1. History of the Colombian Armed Conflict: from the 1960s to today
2. Peace negotiations in Colombia
3. Building a lasting Peace

Visit to the demilitarised zone and FARC camp at IcononzoThe program includes numerous site visits to cultural, governmental and educational organizations involved in the peace process in Colombia. Participants will visit the UN, the Colombian Congress, the Center for Transitional Justice, the Reparation of Victims Unit, the President’s Communication and PR team, and many more.

It also offers a range of social activities such as learning to play Tejo, a Colombian sport, hiking to the beautiful waterfalls at Choachi, the second highest in Latin America, Salsa dance classes and visiting the colourful underground Salt Cathedral at Zipaquira.

The Program Package

The course includes an accommodation package and a busy calendar of social activities so that you can get to know your fellow students as you explore Bogota.

Students are housed as a group in the university’s brand new residence, just a few moments walk from the Uniandes campus. Red Tree Study’s program coordinators will be housed in the same accommodation for the duration of the course and will be on hand to help with any questions and in case of emergency.

The evening and weekend social program, includes a variety of activities – from excursions to discover Colombia’s beautiful landscapes to group meals offering participants the chance to sample typical Colombian cuisine. These activities are carefully selected to enrich your understanding and enjoyment of the country. Dates and Applications

This 3 week academic program will run at Universidad de Los Andes from Monday 7 June until Friday 25 June 2021. 

The program is arranged as a package that includes the classes and site visits, a private room in university accommodation close to the university campus, an airport pickup upon arrival in Bogota and a calendar of social and cultural activities.

The group will be supervised by Red Tree Study’s program coordinators, who will be staying in the same accommodation for the duration, and will be available to help with any questions or in case of an emergency.
